Convert HSBC UK CSV to QBO / QFX / OFX

HSBC UK's statement help says digital statements download as PDF, including statements up to 6 years old. Spreadsheet files are a separate download from the transaction list. The page does not mention QBO, QFX, or OFX.

How to get a bank statement online says other formats such as Excel (xls) or csv have to be done from the transaction list:

  1. Log on to online banking.
  2. Choose the account.
  3. Select Search and filter, and set the date range, amount, and/or keyword.
  4. Select Search.
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the transaction list and select Download.
  6. Choose the format and select Continue.

PDF statements, including in the mobile app, are not the file to convert. Use the transaction-list download.

CSV columns

The source linked below does not publish the column headings in the file. After you download it, use the header row you actually see. In the converter, map a date, a description, and either one signed amount or separate money-in and money-out columns. The preview rewrites dates as YYYY-MM-DD so you can confirm the day and the month before you download.

Convert it

  1. Open the converter and drop in the CSV or Excel file. Excel (.xlsx or .xls) is fine.
  2. If the bank put your name or account number above the table, set the header row to the row that names the columns.
  3. Map the date, the description, and either one signed amount or separate paid-in and paid-out columns. Confirm the dates in the preview, which shows them as YYYY-MM-DD.
  4. Choose QBO for QuickBooks Desktop, QFX for Quicken, or OFX, and download.

FAQ

I only see PDF statements.

That matches HSBC's statement download. The csv and xls options are on the transaction list, after Search and filter, at the bottom of the results.

How far back are statements?

HSBC says you can view old statements up to 6 years back in online or mobile banking. The transaction-list article does not state a separate maximum for the spreadsheet download. Set the date range on the filter screen.

Will QuickBooks Desktop take the xls file?

No. Desktop Web Connect needs a .qbo file. Convert the xls or csv first.
