Convert American Express CSV to QBO / QFX / OFX
American Express documents two different downloads for US card accounts. Quicken and QuickBooks files cover a shorter window than the spreadsheet. This page is about those card downloads, not American Express Savings.
Download transactions
How do I download my transactions to accounting/financial management software? says you can download your recent activity and past six billing statements to Quicken, QuickBooks, or as a CSV file through your online account, using one of the options on the left side of that page. The article does not list the click-path inside the account, and it does not name .qbo or .qfx specifically. It names Quicken, QuickBooks, and CSV.
How do I access my transaction history and billing statements? says your previous two years of transactions can be viewed electronically and downloaded as a PDF, Excel, or CSV file. Older statements that have been archived are PDF copies, available online within 24 hours of you selecting them.
If the QuickBooks or Quicken download stops at six statements and you need the longer spreadsheet, download the Excel or CSV file from the two-year history and convert it.
CSV columns
The source linked below does not publish the column headings in the file. After you download it, use the header row you actually see. In the converter, map a date, a description, and either one signed amount or separate money-in and money-out columns. The preview rewrites dates as YYYY-MM-DD so you can confirm the day and the month before you download.
Convert it
- Open the converter and drop in the CSV or Excel file. Excel (.xlsx or .xls) is fine.
- If the bank put your name or account number above the table, set the header row to the row that names the columns.
- Map the date, the description, and either one signed amount or separate paid-in and paid-out columns. Confirm the dates in the preview, which shows them as YYYY-MM-DD.
- Choose QBO for QuickBooks Desktop, QFX for Quicken, or OFX, and download.
Import the converted file
- QuickBooks Online
- QuickBooks Desktop (needs a .qbo file)
- Quicken for Windows or Mac (needs a .qfx file)
FAQ
Why can't I download a year of QuickBooks files?
Amex's software FAQ limits the Quicken, QuickBooks, and CSV download described there to recent activity and the past six billing statements. The history FAQ is the one that says two years can be saved as PDF, Excel, or CSV.
Which file should I convert?
Use the CSV or Excel file. A PDF statement is not something this converter reads.
Does Rowbridge connect to American Express?
No. You download the file yourself and convert it on your computer. Rowbridge is not affiliated with American Express.
